SASHA

Skies and Seas Hydrogen-fuels Accelerator Coalition

Our aim is to unify aviation and shipping to raise awareness of the vital role of green hydrogen and carbon dioxide from direct air capture (DAC) in the decarbonisation of these two sectors.

For both aviation and shipping, green hydrogen and carbon dioxide derived from DAC will be needed to produce the sustainable fuels of the future.

In place of the fossil-based fuels used to date, shipping and aviation could pursue a wide-range of low-emission alternatives – from hydrogen fuel cells and e-kerosene to methanol and ammonia.

While it is likely that a range of fuels will make up the future fuel mix, one thing that these pathways have in common is the need for green hydrogen – and, for some, DAC – to produce them.

Achieving a just transition to a net zero future in the aviation and shipping sectors is an ambitious goal, but it is one that is achievable with the right supportive policy framework, resources, and collaboration between industry and decision makers.

The Skies and Seas Hydrogen-fuels Accelerator Coalition – or SASHA for short – was formed to make this ambition a reality.

Our aims

  • Demonstrate the vital role of green hydrogen and direct air capture (DAC) in producing the sustainable fuels needed to decarbonise the aviation and shipping sectors.

  • Unify the aviation and shipping sectors to send a clear demand signal for green hydrogen and DAC, and amplify the message that both will be integral to their decarbonisation pathways.

  • Highlight the urgent need for policymakers to ensure policy coherence in the production and use of green hydrogen and DAC across national and regional decarbonisation strategies.

Why Now?

Political attention is increasingly being turned towards hydrogen and DAC, and their development provides many opportunities for a transition away from fossil fuels. The SASHA Coalition is being formed to ensure that the aviation and shipping sectors are present in these conversations and that their voice is heard at this important time.

It will take time to develop and scale the technologies and supporting infrastructure necessary to transition to these sustainable fuels. It is vital that we act now to ensure we meet 2050 net zero goals.

What will the SASHA Coalition do?

To support the aviation and shipping sectors in transitioning to sustainable fuels, the SASHA Coalition will:

  • Bring together peers from the aviation and shipping sectors to form one powerful, unified voice on this issue to have greater influence over policy.

  • Facilitate discussions between industry and decision makers to highlight the crucial role that green hydrogen and DAC will have to play in decarbonising aviation and shipping.

  • Create a clear and strong narrative on the necessity of green hydrogen and DAC in decarbonising the aviation and shipping sectors.

  • Provide opportunities for members to demonstrate their company’s commitment to transitioning to sustainable fuels on international platforms where the future use of green hydrogen and DAC are being addressed.

  • Provide SASHA Coalition members with the knowledge, tools, assets and materials they need to make an impact.
