SASHA is one! Here are our proudest moments from the last year.
Last May, we launched the Skies and Seas Hydrogen-fuels Accelerator Coalition (SASHA) Coalition. Since then, we’ve grown to seven members, launched our Green Hydrogen Gap report and raised our profile in the media. It’s been a busy year – and here, our team reflects on some of the things we’re most proud of.
Aoife – Director
The SASHA Coalition has made a definitive impact in the policy space around the future fuels for shipping and aviation. Our coalition is made up of the bravest, most ambitious companies changing the landscape of what is possible to drive the largest reductions from fuel possible. I'm most proud of when we have intervened in policy discussions to make clear that some sectors don't have many alternatives, and should be prioritised for the limited supply of green hydrogen that there is. After the elections in the UK and EU we'll soon be intervening as legislation gets updated and I can't wait to see what we achieve over the next year!
Hannah – Communications Manager
Starting a new coalition from scratch is no easy task, and good communications are so important to its success. We’ve focused on building a professional brand and raising SASHA’s profile in this first year, to help attract members and put us on the decision makers’ radar. So, I’m really proud to have been involved in developing SASHA’s brilliant brand. It’s also been great to secure some prominent media coverage for SASHA – we’ve had opinion pieces (and letters) in the Financial Times, Euractiv and the EU Observer, as well as coverage across many trade and energy titles such as H2View, TradeWinds, Engine, Splash 247, Bunkerspot and Green Air News.
Nuala – Policy Officer
From launching last year to a membership of seven companies demonstrating the highest ambition from across the aviation and shipping industries today, I’m so proud of the progress we have made over the course of the SASHA Coalition’s first year. We’ve raised the coalition’s profile, articulated our policy positions through our green hydrogen factsheets and regulation roadmaps, and talked about the importance of green hydrogen in decarbonising shipping and aviation at industry events across the UK and EU. There’s still a lot of hard work to be done for the shipping and aviation sectors to transition away from the fossil fuels of today towards truly sustainable alternative fuels, and in the next year I’m looking forward to building on this platform to call for concrete change in the policies and regulations that will make green hydrogen fuels for shipping and aviation a reality.
Sabrina – Project Assistant
The shipping and aviation sectors are carbon intensive, but not 'hard to decarbonise' as some might say – and the SASHA Coalition is proof of this. I am so proud of the network of members we have – they demonstrate that it is possible to decarbonise two of the most energy-intensive industries. Working on developing a set of factsheets about hydrogen is also something I'm very proud of, as they are effective in summarising our messaging and policy requests for incoming parliaments in the UK and EU. Bring on our second birthday!
Martijn – EU Coalition and Policy Consultant
Working with the SASHA team has been an inspiration from day minus one – even the way the team manage the recruitment and selection process, to the collaboration and teamwork I experience on a weekly basis serves as an inspiration to continue the good fight. Each day with SASHA provides an opportunity for two-way learning: from bringing some of my experience from the EU to colleagues keen to learn more about the intricacies of the EU, to learning from my peers about the follies of UK politics. I’m particularly proud of how we work together to move forward a cohesive agenda on both sides of the Channel!
Daniel – Digital Communications Assistant
I started working on the SASHA Coalition six months ago and have been proud since day one contribute to a project that is so clearly valuable. The Coalition fills a crucial gap in climate action, both in addressing the decarbonisation challenges of two hard-to-electrify sectors and, perhaps more importantly, in modelling coalition-building as an indispensible vehicle for impact – we need more collective voices unified by common aims and initiatives that bring together stakeholders across policy, industry and civil society. I was especially proud of our Regulation Roadmaps: it was really inspiring seeing our vision brought into focus and a clear path for reaching it paved forward. I can’t wait to see how much of that road we will have trodden by SASHA’s second birthday next year!
