Fuelling the Future: how green hydrogen and direct air capture will decarbonise aviation and shipping
Recording of our launch event, held virtually on 24 May 2023.
Delivering a just transition to a net zero future for aviation and shipping is an ambitious, yet achievable, goal.
Central to this transition will be a move away from the fossil-based fuels both sectors have used to date towards a wide-range of low-emission alternatives – from e-kerosine to methanol and ammonia.
While it is likely that a range of fuels will make up the future fuel mix, one thing that many of these pathways have in common is the need for green hydrogen – and, for some, direct air capture – to produce them.
This online event explored what role green hydrogen and direct air capture will play in delivering various decarbonisation pathways for shipping and aviation – and the current EU and UK policy landscape supporting these transitions – and introduced attendees to the SASHA Coalition.
The event featured a keynote address from Lord Deben, Chair of the UK Climate Change Committee, a presentation on aviation and shipping’s future fuel pathways from Arup and a panel discussion featuring leading industry voices.

Aoife O'Leary
OPPORTUNITY GREEN & SASHA COALITION
Aoife is the founder and CEO of Opportunity Green and the SASHA Coalition. A lawyer and economist with deep environmental expertise, she founded Opportunity Green to realise her vision of working closely with governments, other NGOs and industry around the world to seize on the opportunities that come with solving the climate crisis. Aoife Is also a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at King’s College London’s Department of Political Economy.
The idea for the SASHA Coalition came about because of how important the role of green hydrogen and carbon dioxide from direct air capture (DAC) will be in the decarbonisation of aviation and shipping.
If these sectors are going to transition to a global net zero economy by 2050, the limited supplies of green hydrogen and DAC must be targeted towards the industries where they provide the fastest, most efficient route to decarbonisation.
